Tuesday, September 2, 2014 - Double Dip

2014-09-02

I emailed Ross first thing in the morning to see if he would be sailing.  He said the forecast looked good, and that he would be at the Wall early in the afternoon.

I stopped at Roosevelt, and while it looked sailable, I was surprised that there was no one there.  It is amazing how things slow down after the long weekend.

I arrived at the Wall around 12:30 and it was blowing.  I rigged my 4.8.  Ross arrived a little later and rigged is 3.8.  We both had good sessioins, but then the wind shifted direction and it started to get gusty with big holes.  After watching the wind for a bit we decided to relocate to Dougs.
Ross - at the Wall
We arrived at Dougs at around 3:00pm.  It was VERY WINDY.  We didn't know it at the time but it was blowing 60k average gusting to 80k..  It was survival sailing for me on my 4.2 (smalles board), and Kode board (smallest board).  Ross had a great session on his 3.4 in the swell a bit down wind.

Ross - blasting
I have never seen the water as low as it was at Dougs.  You can now walk right out to the wind line in knee deep water - then it drops off very quickly into the channel.  When we arrived it looked like one of those old windsurf speed trial movies with a bunch of guy's standing in very shallow water trying to hold on to their rigs while the water "smoke" blew past.....
Doug's Beach - looks like a sandbar...
Ross at the Wall - way down wind...
The Wall!
Ross - after a great session!
We hit it just right - arrived at 3 - sailed until 5.
Wind averaging 40mph - gusting to 50mph

We met up with Karen and after a very quick stop at the White Salmon Salmon Market, and a wine and beer bar - we headed to the Hood River Inn for nice meal of Prime Rib and Fries ($12.00).  Early to bed - looks like more wind tomorrow!
